SBB
We get more than 325 million passengers from A to B every year. In 2007, we joined forces with IT Sky Consulting for the purpose of centralizing the operation of more than 1,000 ticket vending machines. IT Sky Consulting developed software based on Ruby and Java. One of the critical requirements was to accommodate the fact that our vending machines use two distinct operating systems. Karl Brodowsky took care of this job as an in-house software engineer. Thanks to his ability to immediately put his outstanding technology know-how to practical use for the client, we managed to come up with an efficient solution to an unconventional challenge.
Our passengers can now carry out an identical purchase operation, looking at the same GUI, whether they use a vending machine in Zurich or one in Geneva, and they'll never notice a difference. Karl's solution has proven extremely reliable. All our vending machines are monitored via the network using Shell and Ruby scripts.
